Product Description

The Common Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus cirrhosus) is one of the most popular freshwater algae-eating catfish in the aquarium hobby. Known for its bristled face (especially in males), hardy nature, and manageable size, it is an excellent addition to community aquariums and planted tanks.

This species is highly effective at grazing on algae and biofilm across glass, driftwood, and décor. Unlike larger common Plecos, the Bristlenose remains a suitable size for home aquariums while still providing strong algae control and a unique appearance.

Care Guide

  • Scientific Name: Ancistrus cirrhosus
  • Common Name: Common Bristlenose Pleco
  • Care Level: Easy
  • Temperament: Peaceful
  • Diet: Herbivore / Omnivore (algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables such as zucchini and cucumber, driftwood biofilm)
  • Minimum Tank Size: 100 litres
  • Water Temperature: 22–28°C
  • pH: 6.5–7.8
  • Maximum Size: 10–15cm

Feeding

Provide a balanced diet including algae wafers, sinking pellets, and fresh vegetables. Driftwood is essential for digestion and long-term health. Feed mainly in the evening or when lights are dim.

Aquarium Setup

Requires caves, driftwood, and shaded hiding spaces. Prefers stable, well-oxygenated water with moderate flow. Generally safe with most hardy live plants.

Compatibility

Suitable for peaceful community aquariums including tetras, guppies, rasboras, corydoras, and other non-aggressive species. Avoid aggressive tankmates or very small nano tanks for adults.

A reliable and hardy algae eater, the Common Bristlenose is a staple freshwater species that combines functionality, resilience, and character in any community aquarium.
