The Glass Catfish (Kryptopterus bicirrhis) is one of the most unique freshwater aquarium fish, instantly recognisable by its nearly transparent body that reveals its internal skeleton and organs. This peaceful schooling species adds a striking visual element to community aquariums, especially when kept in groups.
Naturally found in slow-moving waters, Glass Catfish prefer calm, well-established aquariums with gentle flow and plenty of swimming space. They are mid-water swimmers and thrive in groups where their translucent bodies shimmer as they move together.
Feed small portions 1–2 times daily. Prefer live or frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, and daphnia. May take time to accept dry foods in new environments.
Requires a calm aquarium with moderate lighting, soft flow, and plenty of open swimming space. Keep in groups of at least 5–6 for confidence and natural schooling behaviour. Provide hiding spots with plants and driftwood.
Suitable for peaceful community fish including tetras, rasboras, gouramis, corydoras, and other non-aggressive species. Avoid aggressive tankmates or very fast feeders that may outcompete them.
A truly captivating species, the Glass Catfish brings elegance and visual intrigue to freshwater aquariums with its transparent body and graceful schooling behaviour.
