The Marine Betta (Calloplesiops altivelis), also known as the Comet, is one of the most striking and unique fish available for marine aquariums. Its dark brown to black body is covered in brilliant white spots, while a large false eye (ocellus) on the dorsal fin helps deter predators by mimicking the head of a moray eel.
Despite its dramatic appearance, the Marine Betta is a peaceful and shy species that prefers subdued lighting and plenty of rockwork for shelter. It spends much of the day hiding in caves before emerging to feed and explore, making it an excellent display fish for mature reef and fish-only marine aquariums.
Feed once or twice daily with a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, krill, chopped prawns, squid, and other quality marine foods. Newly introduced specimens may be shy and require patience before accepting prepared foods.
Provide a mature marine aquarium with abundant live rock, caves, and overhangs for hiding. Moderate water flow, stable water parameters, and subdued lighting or shaded areas will help this species feel secure and display natural behaviour.
